About Yvette

Born to a teen mom & beat the odds to become the 1st African American woman on the Supreme Court of Ohio. Leader on child welfare & juvenile issues.

Ohio Supreme Court Justice Yvette McGee Brown has a unique perspective on the struggles facing Ohio families — because she has lived them and fought to address them for decades as a judge and leading family advocate. The eldest child of a single mother who worked two jobs to support her family, Yvette understood that education was the key to future success. She beat the odds and was accepted to Ohio University in Athens, where she graduated with the help of financial aid, student loans and work-study programs. Yvette won a full scholarship to The Ohio State University Law School, graduating in 1985. She went to work in the Ohio Attorney General’s Office, then became chief legal counsel to the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Corrections and, later, the Department of Youth Services. She took a particular interest in juvenile corrections and the cycle of abuse and neglect that affects many young people in Ohio. So she determined to do something about it.
